Harnden is a traditionally trained painter known for her expressive use of thick oil paint and gestural brushwork. Her work captures scenes of everyday life, reimagined through a vivid and contemporary lens.
Having grown up in Newcastle and now based on the Central Coast, Harnden draws inspiration from her surroundings, aiming to reflect the distinctive character and quiet beauty of the places she knows best. Her subject matter often centers on the small joys of life; intimate moments between friends and family; and quiet connections to the landscapes and animals she encounters in her daily routines.
While oil paint remains her primary medium, she also experiments with gouache, watercolour, and ink, embracing a versatile approach to image-making. Driven by intuition, Harnden seeks to convey the essence of her subjects without relying on exact representation. Her paintings invite viewers in with unexpected combinations of marks and textures, encouraging a closer look and a deeper connection.
